Intuitive forms of the function include a “linear time trend , a quadratic trend , arbitrary polynomial functions of the form , geometric decay , or stepwise functions of the form if and 0 otherwise, with user-defined a and b which capture exogenous events” (Leifeld et al. 2019, pp. 6–7), though certainly not an exhaustive list. Leifeld et al. (2019) further note that such functions of time, can also be interacted with exogenous covariates:

Interactions of this form will model the extent to which the effect of an exogenous covariate X varies with time, be it linearly, quadratically, polynomially, geometrically, or otherwise. The result of applying such functions of time to the vector is a single set of network statistics, but one whose effects change dynamically over time.
